Codes, Characters, Signaling Elements and Protocols play a major role in the information communications between devices.

Codes -  represent meaning between signaling and character sets. Codes are represented in ones and zeros (binary format). In ASC II standard, character A is represented by 101.

Characters - the letters, numerals, spaces, other signs and symbols appearing on the computer key board, and control characters.

Signaling Elements - A character representation sent over a transmission channel. Character A is sent as 001000001 over the channel.

Protocol - Agreed upon rules for communicating information between two systems or processes.
