_________________ __________ The initial data communications systems were proprietary from the computer manufacturers. There were some point-to-point systems connecting a teletype or display to a computer. The time-sharing companies offered remote batch services. As communications facilities demand grew telephone companies saw an opportunity to provide data communications networks. Data Route was one such network from the Canadian telephone companies offering asynchronous and synchronous data communications facilities. Data Pac used Data Route network backbone to offer X.25 packet based services. Neither network exits anymore and the customer base has been migrated into the frame relay, IP and ATM networks. Proprietary Networks - IBM, DEC, HP and other computer companied provided customized solutions with their equipment and proprietary communications protocols. Data Route - A between cities Canadian digital leased line network offering 1200 to 56000 bps asynchronous or synchronous data communications. The equivalent U.S. service was called Data phone Digital Service (DDS). Data Pac - A Canadian data packet network.
