Module 12 - Enterprise/SOHO Communications Needs and Solutions Slide 19 of 30 ________________ Next-Generation Technologies
________________ These are some of the next-generation technologies finding new applications. Speech Recognition - This technology has been with us for a while. It comes in two flavours: Speaker Trained Recognition and Speaker-independent Recognition. Speaker Trained Recognition saves speaker-phrases and when used matches the speaker's spoken phrases with the stored phrases. A caller can save names and associated telephone numbers in a pre-programmed directory and rather then dialing a telephone number just speaks into the system. The system will recognize the voice and dial the name-associated number. Speaker-independent recognition technology recognizes the spoken word regardless of the speaker's voice, accent and intonation. Web-Tone - This concept combines the attributes of the World Wide Web and the PSTN. Much work has been done on this technology. W-CTI - A Wireless Computer-to-Terminal Interface will transform a mobile voice handset into a two-way data communications device, enabling remote interaction with many applications such as database access, remote control of equipment to alarm notification. Virtual Reality - An Interaction with objects from the virtual world, their manipulation, and the feeling that the human user is a real participant in the virtual world. This technology will allow clients to look at an architect's finished design/product, the entertainment industry to provide virtual reality games and the retail industry to provide on-line shopping in Virtual-Malls.
