ATM supports a number of services to subscribers. A subscriber chooses an ATM service based on the application. In preparation for transmission the subscriber's information is adapted into ATM cell format. The ATM Class of Services are used to identify how information will be converted into ATM format. The classes of services are defined by   information characteristics like bit rate, connection type, and timing.

Information Dissecting - The ATM Adaptation layer is responsible for assembling and disassembling the information.

Cell Switching - The ATM switches are responsible for switching cells on a first come first service basis.
