                               Wave Multiplexing and Demultiplexing

In a unidirectional system, several signals from different sources are multiplexed for transmission over a single fiber and de-multiplexed into individual wave streams on the receiving end. In a  bi-directional multiplexing multiple system multiple wavelengths are transmitted and received simultaneously on a single fiber.
