                                               SONET Network Elements

SONET network elements need to interface with existing network elements so that the signals can be transported regardless of framing format and information payload.

Terminating Multiplexer - Generates SONET signals from low speed signals. A Terminating Multiplexer is a special configuration of the Add/Drop multiplexer.

Optical Repeater - Used to regenerate the signal. It also provides Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAMP) functions.

Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) - Adds and drops a variety of signals from a SONET OC-N signal.

Digital Cross Connect - It cross connects STS-N, OC-N, DS-3, DS-1 signals.
