The Internet network connects LANs, WANs, ISPs and NAPS by using routers, transmission facilities with DWDM and SONET technologies and TCP / IP protocols.

Routers - Routers are large switches with the functionality of large networks. Routers are normally used to connect LANs into a WAN. Routers do most of the data packet switching in the Internet network. Routers forward data packets based on OSI layer 3 protocol addresses such as IP.

Facilities - Optical facilities are used for high speed data transmission by using DWDM and SONET technologies. Routers support connections to cable, copper twisted pair and Optical fiber facilities.

Protocols - The Internet network uses TCP/IP to communicate information from one computer to another. TCP/IP is a suite of protocols. There are two versions of IP protocol IPv4 and IPv6.
