_________________ __________ The WWW is constantly changing as Internet sites update their information, and add or delete access to their information. The building blocks of the WWW are Browsers, Hypertext documents, Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML), Links to other documents, URLs, HTTP protocol and Home Pages. Browsers - There are many WWW browsers in the market. The most popular browsers are Netscape and Microsoft Explorer. A browser which resides in a user's computer, is an application that knows how to interpret and display documents that it finds on the World Wide Web. Hypertext Documents - Documents on the WWW are hypertext documents. Hypertext is the text that contains links to another text allowing quick access of other documents from the current document. HTML - HTML is a language used to write a document that is to be displayed through the WWW. HTML has a set of commands that describes how a document is structured. Links - Links are references to other documents. These are live links. Once a link is activated by placing the cursor on the linked text and pressing the mouse, the linked document will appear on the screen. When someone writes a hypertext document, he or she can insert links to other documents that have information relevant to the text in the document. URL - Is a complete description of an item containing the location of the item that one want to retrieve. HTTP - Is a connection-orientated protocol used to carry www traffic between a browser computer and the WWW server being accessed. Home Page - WWW users can set up their own home page with links to sites they use frequently or for services they want to offer to other users on the Internet.
