WLAN products transmit and receive information using radio waves. Multiple, simultaneous transmissions can take place without interference if the radio waves are transmitted on different frequencies. The radio receiver, to extract information, tunes in on one channel while rejecting all other radio signals on other channels. WLANs have evolved for high speed data transmission. IEEE has developed standards (Physical Layer and MAC Layer) across 802.11a, b and g.

802.11 - 1, 2 M bps

802.11a - 54 M bps

802.11b - 11 M bps

802.11g - 54 M bps (extension of 802.11b)
