Coaxial cables vary with the applications and found use in high-speed data transmission. Several types of cables are used for LANs. Cables are classified by Electronic Industry Association (EIA) / Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

Cable Categories: Cable types specifies performance (bps), signal transmission, and maximum segment length of a LAN. For example: Category 3, 4, 5, or 6 are used for Ethernet LAN and ATM networking.

Coaxial Cable Concerns: Cables are too single-purpose; each application require a different type of cable. Cables cannot be used for RS-232, telephone, or ISDN. For the same length cable has very high attenuation compared to fiber-optic cable.
