2G wireless mobile systems were introduced in the late 1980s. These systems were intended primarily for voice transmission. 2G systems use digital encoding and support high bit rate voice and limited data communications. 2G systems also offer data, fax and short message service.

Digital Advanced Mobile Phone System (D-AMPS) - is an extension of AMPS using both digital and analogue speech transmission (standard IS-54) or purely digital transmission (standard IS-136).

U.S. Digital Cellular (USDC) System - Introduced in North America in 1991.

U.S. Narrowband Spread Spectrum - Introduced in North America in 1993.

GSM - Most widely used digital phone system in Europe. First introduced in 1990. GSM supports voice, data, text messaging and cross-border roaming.
