The wireless industry is growing rapidly. Mobile communications services have been widely adopted. Now wireless users represent the leading edge technology adopters. Second-Generation wireless networks are limited to low bandwidth services and are not adequate for multi-media services. Wireless consumers, With the explosion of the Internet and the Web services, are demanding improvements over the existing wireless networks and technologies. Third Generation Wireless technologies provide  transmission capability (large bandwidth) for the multimedia applications.

Third-Generation Systems support M bps data rates intended for multi-media applications such as full-motion video, video-conferencing and full Internet access.

The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) - UMTS, a European 3 G Wireless systems standard, is defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The UMTS Forum is responsible for the development.

Japanese Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunications Services (J-FPLMTS) - A 3 G wireless systems standard in Japanese is defined by the Japanese Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB) organization.

U.S. 3 G Wireless Systems standards - Are defined by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
