Module 9 - Wireless Systems and Technologies Slide 53 of 80 ________________ MMDS Services and Applications
________________ In today's competitive broadband transmission marketplace MMDS is an alternate broadband technology which threatens the dominance of Cable and DSL (Digital Subscriber Loop from the telephone companies) technologies. MMDS supports TV, Internet and data transmission services, and a multitude of residential and business applications. Television Services - Audio and video contents can be combined from satellites, local stations, and the operator's own studio for transmission over the MMDS system. Encoding and combining equipment can be deployed at the head-end, or, where service is to be provided to a number of head-ends in various distant locations. The contents can be redistributed over an ATM backbone to distant MMDS systems for transmission in the individual coverage areas. Advanced services such as pay-per-view and video-on-demand can be provided in addition to basic television broadcasts. Internet Services - High-speed, two-way internet services can be offered over the MMDS system. Internet services can be deployed with high bandwidth on the downstream path, from the network to subscribers, and less bandwidth on the upstream path, from the subscriber to the network. The downstream requires high bandwidth to load web pages and streaming videos etc. while the upstream path requires less bandwidth to communicate back to the network - short bursts of data making queries or confirming information. Data Transmission - The MMDS system is capable of supporting bi-directional transmission of large quantities of data. The system is suited to supporting business applications for example, banks that transfer large amounts of data back and forth between branches and distance learning for school systems with high quality instruction to remote locations.
