One of the fastest developing areas of radio use by telephone service providers is centered on the use of radio within the local loop known as Wireless Local Loop (WLL). Telecommunications operators worldwide are considering deployment of WLL technology for the last mile of customer connection. The wireless market is exploding globally as a result of liberalization in the mobile wireless markets.  Radio offers a viable alternative to the wired solution for rural and urban areas.

WLL is a system that connects subscribers to the Public Switched Telephone Network using radio signals. Radio signal path is used as a substitute for copper for all or part of the connection between the PSTN switch and the subscriber. WLL systems include cordless access systems, proprietary fixed radio access systems and fixed cellular systems. Much of the growth of WLL systems is seen in developing countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia and Indonesia.

WLL is an efficient way to deploy POTS for millions of subscribers without burying copper wire or optical fiber.
