Module 12 - Enterprise/SOHO Communications Needs and Solutions Slide 1 of 30 ________________ Objectives: This module provides an insight into enterprise and SOHO networking and telecommunications needs, technological trends, and the services offered by the telecommunications carriers. The optimized enterprise and SOHO perform at the highest possible levels through ongoing adoption of new technologies to meet their internal and external communications needs. Corporations continue to change and adjust to the new
economic reality, by looking for ways to give better returns to share holders, by reducing costs
and improving the bottom line. Globalization has changed their communications
needs. Networks and telecommunications are the lifeblood of modern business.
Their mission is to reach customers and deliver products and
services competitively. The changing nature of the business (e.g. impact of
consolidation, mergers, going to other countries to secure new markets,
legislation and outsourcing) is impacting networks and telecommunications (e.g.
bandwidth, convergence, mobility, and sourcing). A paradigm shift, is taking place in industry, from the conventional way of doing business to e-businesses, by computerizing the business processes resulting in a superior bottom line. Enterprise solutions are not merely
limited to the telephone companies. Communications equipment manufacturers,
such as Cisco and Nortel Networks, also provide enterprise communications
solutions. Small Office Home Office (SOHO) is a growing market. The U.S. has 40 million home offices. About 9.4 million home offices have 2 PCs and would like home networking. Some offices are extensions of their companies. The SOHO network allows for connections of multiple network devices onto a home or office network. These devices can represent a desktop or wireless laptop computer, a wireless handheld device, or a network printer either wired or wireless, or an IP telephone. There are many technologies, such as ADSL, HDSL, Cable Connection, HomeRF, Bluetooth, for home networking. A small office can be networked with other small office networks or with the corporate network. This module will cover: 1.0 Enterprise applications 2.0 SOHO applications 3.0 Enterprise communications needs 4.0 SOHO communications needs 5.0 Available enterprise communications/networking technologies 6.0 Available SOHO communications/networking technologies 7.0 Scalability of communications technologies 8.0 Enterprise networking solutions 9.0 SOHO networking solutions 10.0 Next-generation technologies ________________
