                                        Mini - Workshop

Objective:    The purpose of this workshop is to develop a communications solution, based on
                      ATM technology, to meet Westco Electronic Enterprise's communications needs.

About Westco Electronics Enterprise:    This workshop is about a fictitious company,
Westco Electronics Enterprise, but the solution is applicable to similar real time situations.

Westco Electronics Enterprise is a Canadian company with its head office in Ottawa, Ontario. It develops products in Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary locations. The company markets its products to a large distribution company in SanFrancisco, California from the Ottawa office.

Enterprise Communications Needs: Westco in Ottawa has two corporate servers (requiring 155 M bps connections), and one workstation (requiring 25 M bps connection), in Calgary one Ethernet LAN (10 M bps) and one Token Ring (16 M bps) and in Toronto three ATM workgroup stations (25 M bps) and a server (25 M bps). The head office is connected to the distributor's ATM network at 155 M bps.

All locations deal with each other to work on the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of the company products. It uses the public telephone network for voice communications.

Workshop Tasks:

Task 1:    Draw Westco network architecture
                - Locations, location networks / other resources, connections to other locations
                - Identify link speeds

Task 2:    Identify ATM services and ATM adaptation layers required for each location
