Computer Communications is the end-to-end solution to the customers application. It includes Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and  data communications system. Data communications system includes Data Communications Equipment (DCE) and data communications network.

Customer Provided Equipment (CPE) - A computer system and a Local Area Network (LAN) are examples of the CPE. Customer applications and required protocols (OSI layers), to communicate application to the other end, are located in the CPE.

Data Communications Equipment (DCE) - A modem and a multiplexer are the examples of the DCE. The data terminal uses DTE interface to connect to the DCE interface in the Data Communications Equipment.

Data Communications System - A data communications system includes the DTE transferring binary data to the data communication equipment, communications medium and related equipment and at the remote end communications equipment transferring binary data to the DTE.
