A typical communications system includes enterprises branch offices connected by its core network to communicate with the head office and with each other. The branch offices, to connect to its core network, use the Internet and/or the PSTN.

Access Loop - An access facility to connect the CPE to the high speed communications network. It could be connecting a PABX, A LAN and a computer to the backbone network.

Core Network - A high speed network using ATM infrastructure or router infrastructure to connect the major locations of an enterprise.
