Computers have become powerful and are available at reasonable cost. The operating systems and applications software are still expensive. On the customer's premises high speed Wire line and Wireless LANs are growing. 100 M bps, 1000 M bps and 802.11 (a, b g) technologies are available off-the-shelf.

The computer hardware is compact and powerful. The processor power is in gigabit range and within the consumer's price range. The computer systems are geared for multi-media applications.

Corporations are deploying Giga bps Ethernet LANs for the IP PABXs and IP phones.

The wireless LANs are capable of networking at 50 Mbps. More and more companies are taking advantage of that. Security issues are still being addressed with this technology.
