Module 1 - An Overview of the Communications Industry Slide 14 of 26 _________________ __________ Networks Evolution
The telephone, cable, wireless and Internet networks are evolving at tremendous speed to keep up with the new applications. The telephone companies set-up IP networks to meet enterprise needs and added new technologies like ADSL, Frame Relay, ATM to their networks. Now they are modifying the PSTN with convergent technologies to accommodate multi-media applications. The Cable companies have upgraded their infrastructure to provide bi-directional services and deploying the convergent technologies. The Internet core network upgraded to Giga bps links to meet growth and bandwidth hungry applications. IP technology has moved into Intranet, Extranet and LAN with convergent technologies. The wireless networks are capable of carrying high speed transmission to the customer's premises. The telephone companies POTS network has evolved into providing voice services to multi-media services. The POTS infrastructure includes optical fibers in the Toll ( between Central Offices) and xDSL technologies in the access loops. The fiber drops are available to corporations. Telephone companies have deployed ATM based networks to provide high speed data services to customers. The Cable companies have upgraded their network from a one way to a two way communications network and have deployed optical fiber in their network. The wireless companies have deployed technologies to provide voice, data and Internet services. The Internet core network is upgraded from 45 M bps to Gega bit per sec range. The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are capable of providing Mega bps access to the Internet for their customers.
