Internet applications exploded in the late 90s. Many companies were set up to provide Web services. Young 15 year old whiz kids were developing mind boggling sites peddling all sorts of information. Communications companies had to find new technologies to provide high-speed access lines. Customers migrated from dial-up capable of 56 K bps speed to 1.544 M bps speed connections. The high-speed Internet services became available from the cable and the telephone companies. Now the Internet services are available on the Wireless network.

The Internet services have been the story of late the 1990s and early 2000s. The Internet Protocol (IP) changed the communications world. New services like e-Commerce, Distant Education, Voice-over-the-Internet, Music-over-the-Internet, Web-broadcasting, Websites evolved. The enterprises used the technology to deploy Intranet, Extranet networks for communications needs.

- The telephone companies initially offered the dial-up services and then high speed xDSL services. The cable companies started providing the Internet service. Now wireless companies provide some internet services on their network.
