Most of the standards have evolved in North America and Europe. Most notable North American standard bodies are The Electronic Industries Association (EIA), The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and The Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE).

EIA - Best known standards are RS-232 series

ANSI - All U.S. standards are created under the auspices of ANSI. It is a member of the ISO.

IEEE - Well known for 802 standards for LANs. It is also involved in developing 802.11 a, b and g wireless LAN standards.
