Module 2 - Data Communications Basics and Legacy Technologies Slide 45 of 45 _________________ __________ Glossary ADSL -
Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line - A method of sending 1.544 M bps data over
copper pairs. ANSI -
The American National Standards Institute is a national clearing house and co-ordinating
agency for standards implemented in the United States. It is a member of the
International Organization for Standards (ISO) and develops and co-ordinates
standards in data communications for the OSI. ATM -
Asynchronous transfer Mode - A very high speed, full-duplex, fixed-length 48
byte cell switching scheme for voice, data and video. CA*NET 4
- CA*NET is a Canadian Internet network owned by CA*net Networking Inc. CA*net
was established in 1989 and was initially managed by the University of Toronto
Computing Services Department. The network has gone through many upgrades:
CA*Net II, CA*NET III and now CA*NET 4, a high speed network with giga bps
switching hubs with the capacity to route traffic at gig bps speeds. CCS #7
- A Common Control Signaling scheme used in the ISDN and the Public Switched
Telephone Network. EIA
- The Electronic Industries Association is a national trade association which
develops standards. Best known for RS-232 standards. FDM - A Frequency Division Multiplexer is a device which divides the available
transmission frequency range into narrower bands. Each narrow band is a separate
channel for the information transmission. IEEE -
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, involved in developing
standards for many years. It is well known for the LAN and wireless (802.11 a, b
and g) standards. TDM - A
Time Division Multiplexer is a device which derives multiple channels on a
single transmission line by connecting terminals one at a time at regular
intervals. WDM -
Wave Division Multiplexing is the technique used to send several channels at
different wavelengths through the same optical fiber. _________________ __________
