The public data networks designed by using the PSTN facilities had a limited reach and transmission rate up to 56 K bps for asynchronous and synchronous data transmission. The packet networks were also slow and limited to data applications. The growth  in the Local Area Networks put pressure on the telephone industry, the communications industry and the computer industry to come up with new technologies to connect the various LANs.
