Objectives:

This module is designed for you to review data communications building blocks and data  communications legacy technologies and networks. This module also includes network interface standards, North American digital hierarchies and European digital hierarchies, and mature data services offered by the Canadian telephone communications carriers (Bell Canada, Telus and AT&T Canada). The last topic covered in this module is the reasons for the telecommunications, computer and communications industry to develop the next-generation technologies to eliminate the limitations of the legacy technologies.

It is assumed by N-GEN Communications that you are familiar with the fundamentals of data communications to understand the next-generation technologies and their applications covered in the other modules.

The objective of this module is to review:

1.   Data Communications Building Blocks

Data Types, Data Transmission Modes, Data Transfer Types, Data Transmission Methods,
Data Transmission Media and their Capabilities, Transmission Impairments, Data Modulation
Types, A Channel, Channel Band Width

2.   A Typical Data Communications Network Architecture
CPE, DCE, DTE, Interface Standards (EIA, ISO, CCITT and ITU) and data communications
equipment (Data Sets, Line Drivers, Multiplexers and Routers)

3.   OSI Model and Legacy Technologies

OSI Layers, Protocols, SDLC, BiSync, HDLC, SNA and X.25

4.   North American and European Digital Hierarchies
     DS - Series, T - Series and E - Series

5.   Legacy Networks
     Data Route, Data Pac

6.   Mature Networks and Services (Telecommunications Carriers)
PSTN, ISDN, Dataphone, Private Line, T-1, Fractional T-1, DS-0)

After completing this module you will also learn the drivers behind developing the next-generation technologies like Frame Relay, ATM, SONET, IP Convergence technologies.
