Module 3 - Frame Relay Technology Slide 1 of 34 _________________ __________ Objectives: This module provides an introduction to the Frame Relay switching technology. It is a high performance synchronous High Level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol network technology. The data is sent in HDLC packet format. These packets are known frames. The HDLC packet format is used by IBM’s SDLC and X.25 and by some other protocols. Frame Relay is a growing technology and has performed beyond service providers' expectations. This technology is seen as a vehicle to provide LAN – to – LAN connections and consolidate low-speed traffic on to a high-speed link. Case studies of the application of this technology have been included in the module to reinforce the value of this technology for wide area networking. The objective of this module is to cover: 1. What is Frame Relay technology 2. Why Frame Relay technology was developed? 3. How does Frame Relay compare to X.25 technology? 4. Who developed Frame Relay technology? 5. Frame Relay technology standards 6. Frame Relay network architecture 7. Frame Relay network components 8. Quality of Service (QOS) addressed by Frame Relay technology 9. Strengths and weaknesses of Frame Relay technology 10. Frame Relay technology application 11. How does Frame Relay technology compare with other technologies? _________________ __________
