                                     ATM System Architecture

An ATM system can be visualized as having three components: Adaptation Layer, located in the customer's equipment, ATM Layer and Physical Layer located in an ATM switch.

An Adaptation Layer provides the customer information in 48 bytes chunks. ATM Layer adds 5 bytes of header information to the 48 bytes to make an ATM cell. The Physical layer interfaces with the transmission lines and places ATM cells on the line for transmission.
