                                     ATM Switch  Physical Layer Operation

An ATM Physical Layer is equivalent to Layer 1 of the OSI model. It provides speed matching and framing, and interfacing to the plant, which is normally optical fiber using SONET. This layer provides speed matching and framing on both access and trunk side.
