ATM services require the programming of various parameters in the customer's equipment and the ATM network.

Adaptation Layers - Software within customer equipment for interfacing with higher layers, and preparing data for segmentation and reassembly.

Virtual Channels - Worked by a customer and a network designer. Programmed in the switches (Translation tables with Virtual Paths)

Virtual Paths - Worked by a customer and a network designer. Programmed in the switches (Translation tables with Virtual Channels)

QOS - Part of the customer contract with the network. Programmed into the network to meet QOS agreed upon by a customer and the network.

PVCs and SVCs - Worked by a customer and a network designer. Programmed into the network.
