In the age of distributed computing, the focus has shifted to high-speed communications network technologies. SONET is the technology which is suited for an environment requiring bulk data transmission at very high speeds for storage and processing. 

Banks, insurance companies, manufacturing companies, telecommunications companies and all levels of governments can use SONET in their networks for global communications, multi-media communications and interconnecting various LANs and WANs.

The universities use SONET for campus networks. The telecommunications industry uses this technology to deploy Metropolitan Area Networks.
