SONET is independent of the traffic or services transported on it.

Carriers benefit from SONET as they can sell more bandwidth without installing more fiber. SONET eliminates proprietary equipment thereby increasing the life of the installed base.

The enterprises benefit from SONET as they can consolidate traditionally separate application networks to provide multimedia services.

SONET is a universal standard which supports 51.84 M bps to 9.6 G bps over a single fiber. Survivability SONET rings can be set up to ensure service continuity. SONET allows bandwidth management to the DS-0 level and permits self-diagnostics and fault analysis in real-time to identify problems before they disrupt service.
