A most common form of SONET Ring topology is the Unidirectional path protection switched ring. It has two rings: one is the working ring and the other is the protection ring. The ring, in case of failure, will take corrective action.

A SONET ring topology can also be set up with four fibers. In this topology traffic shares the working and protection fibers between two nodes and is routed over the shortest path between nodes.
