N-ISDN has been designed to operate over the current copper-based communications infrastructure. B-ISDN relies on the optical fiber infrastructure.

N-ISDN - A Wide Area Network orientated data communications service provided by telephone companies. It supports applications requiring a data transmission rate of up to 1.544 M bps. It supports a wide range of voice and data services.

B-ISDN - A broadband network uses ATM and SONET transport to provide voice, data and video services at very high speeds.

B-ISDN Standards - ITU-T has defined the B-ISDN  standards. This service is not widely used.

B-ISDN Applications - The ITU-T has defined the services and associated standards of ISDN communications, and has recommended two service areas for application with B-ISDN, Interactive Services, and Distribution Services.
