SONET offers the standardized, high capacity, intelligent transport medium to provide infrastructure with cost-effective Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAMP) mechanisms. This standard is accepted by carriers, equipment manufacturers and users all over the world.

Universal Standard - SONET and SDH are acceptable to communications, computer, equipment manufacturers and users. SONET offers 51.84 M bps to 9.6 G bps and is extendable to 13 G bps.

Core Network Technology - The carriers are Enterprises using this technology in their core networks. It will some day will find a place in local loops with bandwidth hungry applications like online games.

Independent of Services to be Transported - This is one of the features which makes SONET desirable by carriers who use it to transport FDDI, Frame Relay and SMDS services on one infrastructure.
