The future Optical Networks in the high-level hierarchy will have long-haul, metro and access network components. The long-haul networks, will be responsibility of large trans-national and global carriers, which will span both regionally and extend geographically over thousands of kilometers. These networks will connect Metropolitan area networks and amongst each other will extend global connectivity between regions.

The long-haul networks and Metropolitan Area Networks will deploy DWDM and SONET/SDH technologies.

The access networks will represent the edge of the MAN. The access networks rates will range from DS-1, DS-3, OC-3, OC-12, Ethernet to OC-48 to OC-192. The access network customers will be made up of residential customers, and large corporations including private, government and educational institutions.
