The NGI initiative is a multi-agency U.S. Federal R&D program.

History - President Clinton and Vice President Gore announced the Program in 1996. In 1998, the NGI implementation plans were developed.

Goals To  - Promote experimentation with the next-generation on network technologies.
              - Develop a next-generation network test bed to connect universities and federal research institutions
at rates that are sufficient to demonstrate the new technologies and support future research.
              - Demonstrate new applications

Test bed - High performance connectivity - Delivering 100 times of the current Internet performance at 100 NGI
                sites.
             - Ultrahigh Performance Connectivity - Delivering end-to-end network connectivity at 1+ G bps at
               10 NGS sites.

The NGI Nodes - High Performance Connectivity Network - 100 universities, Federal research institutions
                      - Ultrahigh Performance Connectivity Network - vBNS, NREN, DREN and ESnet
