The U.s. has many high speed networks operated by Federal government departments, universities and industries. The notable ones are: Abilene, VBNS, NREN, DREN and ESnet.

Abilene - Run by Indiana University, has major nodes in Seattle, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Cleveland and New York City..

vBNS - This is NSF's very high performance Backbone Network Services network. vBNS has nodes in Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, Washington, Perryman, MD, Boston and New York City.

NREN - This is NASA's Research and Education Network.

DREN - DOD's Defense Research and Engineering Network.

ESnet - DOE's Energy Sciences network.
