In order to use e-Commerce effectively, users of these systems require many functionalities in the system that include ability to search and access relevant information, make monitory transactions for purchasing and selling products and services, and secure business transactions against corruption and theft of data.

Digital Currencies - Digital currencies are intended to permit their users to move funds electronically.

e-Catalog - Electronic catalogs organize information based on content and allow users to browse through and select the relevant items.

Electronic Payment Systems - Electronic payment systems credit and debit money in accounts electronically. Electronic payments include digital currencies (smart cards, electronic money), credit card payments and electronic checks. Electronic money emulates the real-life exchange of goods and services from equivalent to physical currencies.

Transaction Security - Security is a fundamental requirement in e-Commerce during transactions involving financial information. Encryption is used to secure the information. Apart from transaction security corporations are very concerned about corporate secrets and proprietary information. The e-Commerce environment ensures network resources and entities are protected from potential threats and guarantees at least at the same level of security as in paper-based commerce.

Network Infrastructure - Electronic Commerce systems require a technical architecture that is scalable, enables resource sharing, and provides transparency of data locations and decision support. e-Commerce systems use latest state-of-the-art communications technologies for a prompt response.
