An extranet is a private network using Internet technologies and the public telecommunications system to securely share business information with suppliers, partners, vendors, distributors and customers.

An extranet requires security and privacy from external customers accessing the Intranet over public data networks. It requires a firewall server, and digital certificates or some other means of authentication to maintain security.
