100 M bps Ethernet LAN Configuration
                                                (using Cisco equipment)

Customer:    City of Houston, Houston, U.S.A.

Customer Profile:    The City of Houston employs 23,000 people in 18 departments. Each department has their own IT departments with systems from IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Honeywell, Unisys and Amdahl. The city had a X.25-based network from AT&T operating at 9600 bps. In 1995, the city asked router vendors to design a network that could support its voice and data requirements for the 21st century. The city wanted to construct a TCP / IP based WAN to replace the X.25 network and integrate it with two existing fiber-optic networks.

Solution:    Cisco designed a TCP/ IP based WAN to meet the City of Houston's needs by using 100 M bps Ethernet LAN routers.

Network Architecture: The city network uses Cisco 7200 and 2500 series routers. A pair of Catalyst 5000 switches are used to support 100-Ethernet links to the city departments.
