A small ground-based satellite dish antenna is used to communicate with a large central satellite dish antenna and from there to a central computer system. The signals from the remote end users are transmitted to the central satellite dish via satellite at 256 K bps.

VSAT is located at the customer's site connected directly to their equipment. The system can be configured for one-way or two-way transmission up to 256 K bps.

Typical applications: networking Automatic Teller Machines, Point-of-Sale terminals, financial/news networks and other inquiry-response applications.

The greatest interest has been in developing countries such as India, China and Indonesia
