The IEEE developed 802.11 standards for wireless LANs to support roaming in a home, a large office or business, or campus environment. 802.11 standard operates at 2.4 G Hz frequency and supports 1 M bps and 2 M bps data rates. 802.11b supports 11 M bps operating in the 2.4 G Hz frequency band. It uses Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology.  802.11a supports 54 M bps, using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), operating in the 5 G Hz frequency band. 802.11 g is an enhancement of the 802.11b standard and supports data rates of 22 M bps.

Popular Wireless Network Technologies:

Name Maximum Speed Fallback Speed
HomeRF 10 M bps 0.8 M bps
802.11b WiFi 11 M bps 1, 2, 5 M bps
802.11g 22 M bps 11,5, 2, 1 M bps
802.11a 54 M bps -
