A Case Study - Planning a LMDS Network

Customer:    Spanish Communications Service Provider

A Spanish Communications service provider has received a license to operate in the 28 G Hz (500 M Hz bandwidth) and 31 G Hz bands (300 M Hz bandwidth) to implement an LMDS system to provide, the user infrastructure to other operators licensed for POTS and high-speed data and private networks and multimedia services to institutional customers, large customers, Small Office / Home Office (SOHO), and residential users located in high population density areas.

The service provider has decided to locate a Headend at Madrid’s Polytechnic University Campus. The Headend will house the Network Access Infrastructure (ATM data network, PSTN, Internet connections and video information feeds) and the Network Management Center.

The service provider is planning in phases for LAN-to-LAN connection at 0.5 M bps, Internet access at 1 M bps, Video conferencing at 0.5 M bps and TV broadcasting at 2 M bps (compressed) to residential customers.

In phase 1, the service provider will service 200 SOHO customers at a distance of 5 km from the base station providing 99.99% service availability. The services available to SOHO customers are Telephony, Internet access, Video conferencing and TV broadcasting.

The final LMDS network will provide more services and higher service availability to a wider area.

In Phase I the service provider will deploy one cell to cover all the potential customers. As demand grows more cells will be added.

Network Architecture:

Backbone Broadband Network:

Customer Premises Equipment:

Small Office and Home Office (SOHO) Services:

Service Type Bandwidth Requirements QOS
