The convergence of audio, video and data in enterprise networks has made Ethernet LAN technology evolve from 10 M bps to 100 and 1000 M bps. The Plain Old Telephone Switching network is evolving to accommodate the Internet (voice, video and data) traffic. The next-generation cable networks are aiming for interactive games and entertainment. The next-generation Internet initiatives are being taken for giga bps connections.

100 M and 1000 M bps Ethernet LAN - This technology is available off-the-shelf from Cisco and 3Com.

Next-Generation PSTN - Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies have developed switches to replace class 5 switches in the PSTN to accommodate the Internet traffic.

Next-Generation Cable Networks - Optical and SONET have been introduced in the network to accommodate HDTV channels. VOIP and Cable Modem to provide Voice over IP and high speed Internet access.

Next-Generation Internet Network - Canada has taken CA*net4 initiative while the Americans have Next Generation Internet (NGI) and Internet 2 initiatives. Internet 2 is an initiative to connect existing high speed networks such as Abiline, vBNS, Internet2 and ARENA (Advanced Research and Education Network Atlas). Internet 2 also has links to international networks such as CA*net3, DREN, Esnet and NREN.
