                                Second Window - near 1310 nanometers

Commercial optical communications systems are designed for special applications.

First Window - A near 850 nanometer wavelength from a light source is used with multi-mode fiber. These systems are designed for short range transmission applications.

Second Window - A near 1310 nanometer wavelength from a light source is used with single-mode fiber.

Third Window - A near 1550 nanometer wavelength from a light source is used with single-mode fiber. These systems are designed to meet the requirements for DWDM systems.

Fourth Window - A 1550 nanometer wavelength from a light source is used with single-mode fiber. These systems are designed with dispersion-shifted fiber and are not suitable for DWDM applications.
