The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the major Third Generation mobile systems developed in Europe by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and known as IMT-2000. UMTS is supported by major telecommunications operators and vendors. The basic intent of UMTS is to build on and extend the capability of existing mobile, cordless and satellite systems to provide increased capacity, data capability and a greater range of services using an innovative radio access scheme and an enhanced core network.

IMT-2000 - Is an open international standard for high capacity, high data rate mobile telecommunications systems including terrestrial and satellite systems.

Why UMTS? - It will enable future broadband wireless services such as videoconferencing, e-commerce and entertainment be available to mobile users via fixed, wireless and satellite networks.

When UMTS? - The Worldwide deployment is anticipated by 2005.
