Module 4 - ATM Technology Slide 46 of 46 _________________ __________ Glossary AAL -
ATM Adaptation Layer is a protocol that translates higher layer services in the
size and format of an ATM cell. ANSI
- The American National Standards Institute is a national clearing house and co-ordinating
agency for standards implemented in the United States. It is a member of the
International Organization for Standards (ISO) and develops and co-ordinates
standards in data communications for the OSI. ATM -
Asynchronous transfer Mode - A very high speed, full-duplex, fixed-length 48
byte cell switching scheme for voice, data and video. Cell Loss
Ratio - Lost Cells/Total transmitted cells, objective over the
life time of the connection, expressed as an order of magnitude, like 1 in 10 or
unspecified. Cell
Transfer Delay - Elapse time between a cell exiting at the source
UNI to the cell reaching to the destination UNI for a particular connection. NNI -
Network-to-Network Interface specifies signaling and management functions
between two networks. PVC -
Permanent Virtual Circuit is a permanent connection for frequent and consistent
data transfer. SVC -
Switched Virtual Circuit is a temporary connection used for sporadic data
transfer. SDH - Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy, European transmission standard. UNI -
User-to-Network Interface specifies signaling and management functions between an
ATM device and the end user's device. VC -
Virtual Channel defines the unidirectional virtual transmission of ATM cells
from a specific end user VP -
Virtual Path defines the aggregate bundle of Virtual Channels with the same end
user point. _________________ __________
